HAVA player hits Nokia's internet tablets

Engadget

Monsoon's HAVA HD streamer doesn't get quite as much love as the various Slingboxes, but it's a fine piece of kit with features Sling doesn't have quite yet, like pause and rewind -- and now it's got one more supported client platform, as the company's using CTIA to roll out support for Nokia's Internet Tablet OS. That means the N800 and N810 can now get in on the action, and the quality looks pretty decent -- the crew over at Internet Tablet Talk got a chance to play with an early version, and they think it looks even better than the PC client. Hmm, looks like that WiMAX N810 could double as a fairly decent portable TV, eh? Video after the break. Read more.

Today's Show: HAVA Titanium HD from Monsoon Multimedia $249.99

HDTV and Home Theater podcast

Our first place-shifting review happened way back in October of 2005 on Episode 40 when we first looked at the Sling Media Slingbox.  It's been two years, and we're now looking at a device that bills itself as the Slingbox Killer - the HAVA.  Place shifting isn't exactly the revolution that it might have been 2 years ago, but it's still cool, and the HAVA adds some unique twist to the application that are really nice.  In a nutshell the HAVA allows you to watch TV on virtually any PC on your home network, or on any Internet connected PC anywhere in the world. Monsoon Multimedia HAVA Wireless HD

Maximum PC

Is Sling about to be outslung? We like to reward innovation, and there’s no question that Sling Media popularized the concept of location-shifting TV with the original Slingbox. In fact, we awarded the new Slingbox Pro a nine verdict in our February issue. Monsoon Multimedia’s HAVA Wireless HD trumps Sling’s product in some very important ways—but trails it in others. Technology Review: HAVA Product Line

Gizmos for Geeks

Imagine a teaching auditorium full of students, each with their own laptop, able to watch whatever is taking place on stage through their laptop and a wireless connection. Not only is the lesson being wirelessly multicasted to all of the student's laptops, but each individual student has the control to pause, rewind and even record directly to their laptop. Seems futurist right? Well, Monsoon Multimedia has created the "special sauce" to do just that today! Read more.

Monsoon's HAVA Offers Benefits Beyond TiVo and Slingbox

Gadgetell

Monsoon’s HAVA is a new device that has all of the functionality of a Slingbox but with more features and capabilities and double the video resolution - plus it’s completely wireless. HAVA does much more than the Slingbox. The software that comes with it allows for recording, placeshifting, timeshifting, scheduling (like TiVO), and unlike Slingbox, more than one person can log in and watch the same program. HAVA Wireless HD Product Review

PC Magazine

Like Sling Media's Slingbox Pro, Monsoon Multimedia's HAVA Wireless HD lets you watch your television on any broadband-connected PC, anywhere in the world. The HAVA differs from the Slingbox, however, in two ways. First, the device functions as a TV source for Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition's digital video recorder feature. Second, it connects to your network wirelessly, over 802.11g.

Microsoft-certified drivers mean the HAVA can record onto your computer's hard drive, which the Slingbox cannot do. Users without DVRs or TiVos in their entertainment system can pause, rewind, and fast-forward programs in the HAVA PC Player software, or choose programs to be recorded using the guide in MCE. Also unlike the Slingbox, the HAVA Wireless HD has its own built-in TV tuner, so broadcasts can be captured by simply attaching a good antenna directly to the device's RF input.
