Using hava with digital antenna?

Postby gundam83 on Thu Jul 16, 2009 10:23 pm

I have an HDTV, and it's currently getting fed OTA HD channels via digital antenna. Would I be able to use one of the HAVA units with this setup? I basically want to be able to watch HD broadcasts on a local computer, and possibly over my laptop or iphone (using Orblive?) I was planning on just buying a USB HDTV dongle for my home computer, but HAVA units aren't that much more, and would hopefully offer me the ability to watch channels on the go.

If OTA antenna wouldn't work, what about with comcast's most basic cable service without a set top box?

There is no such thing as a digital antenna, despite a whole lot of marketing hype. Are you in the US and are you talking digital TV broadcasts? If so, your old analog TV antenna will work for the new DTV broadcasts, because the RF signal is still running over the same old frequencies (minus a few upper UHF frequencies that have been resold by the FCC).

Regarding Monsoon products, my understanding is that the Hava Wireless is the only model that has an NTSC tuner. The latter might work with basic cable, unless they've switched over to digital like US broadcasters have. There is a rumored new model that will have an ATSC tuner instead of (or in addition to) an NTSC tuner, but that's not yet available.

I agree with what you said. TV antenna will work for DTV. :)

If using Comcast cable STB then yes I use that and it works fine.

HAVA does have an IPHONE app as well

The only Hava with a tuner in it is the Hava Wireless HD. With that model, you can receive OTA analog, but not OTA digital, since it has an analog tuner, not a digital tuner. So, if the OP was asking if you can connect an antenna directly to the Hava and get OTA digital, the answer is no, and, if you want OTA analog, you need the Hava Wireless HD. Of course, you can always attach the antenna to something with a tuner, like a cable box, DVR or TV, and use that with any Hava model. In that case, you'd just have to make sure that the tuner is digital if you want OTA digital.
